Difference between Au Pair’s and Nannies
As an Au pair you’ll live with a family for a minimum of 6 months providing up to 35 hours of childcare per week and receive weekly pocket money, food and accommodation.
Bro Pair aka Male Au Pairs
Male Au Pairs aka “bro pairs” or "mannies" have become increasingly popular. Some host families who have all boys actually find that male Au pairs are better suited to their family’s needs. We invite anyone who loves working with children, meets the program and wants to travel to Australia to apply.
Pocket Money & Other Benefits
Get all the facts on what you can expect to receive as an Au Pair in Australia.
Being an AIFS Au pair in Australia, you will receive pocket money from your Host Family. Don't forget that your accommodation and food is provided for by the family - yep that’s three meals a days 7 days a week. Depending on the hours of care and your experience, you can expect to receive the following:
Platinum
To qualify as an AIFS Platinum Au pair you need to meet one of the following criteria:
- At least 1 year's full time work experience in a childcare or educational setting
- Worked as an Au pair for at least one year with children aged under 3 years
- Have completed an Au Pair placement in the US of 12 months or longer
- Have a childcare qualification
Amounts are in Australian Dollars
Plus
To qualify as an AIFS Plus Au pair you need to meet one of the following criteria:
- 200 hours childcare experience
- Minimum 100 hours working with under 3 years
Amounts are in Australian Dollars
Classic
To qualify as an AIFS Classic Au pair you need to meet one of the following criteria:
- 200 hours childcare experience with any age group
Amounts are in Australian Dollars
If you are completing a 9 month program, you will receive a $300 completion bonus and two weeks pocket money with time off to explore.
More Information
Tax
Most Au pairs are not required to pay tax if they are considered exempt under Fair Work rules. However if you wish to find part time work at a local café, or start working after you have finished your placement then you will need to pay 15% tax on the first dollar.
Time off
As part of your role, you’ll get a minimum of 1.5 days off a week but it may be more so there is plenty of time to explore. During your time to yourself, you can do whatever you like, whether its chilling at the beach, meeting friends for coffee - its totally up to you! If you are worried about finding friends, don't be! From the day you arrive you will be joining other Au Pairs for your Arrival Orientation. Most Au Pairs create a WhatApp group with other Au Pairs at their orientation in addition to joining groups in their own area.
