Being an Au Pair
Au Pair in Australia is an amazing way to experience the Australian way of life whilst living with an Australian family and caring for their children. It's an exciting adventure where you can share and expand your experience whilst exploring many opportunities.
When you are an Au pair you become an extended part of a new family, sharing your culture and combining childcare with a year of adventure and travel. You will be a friend, companion and role model to the children that you will be caring for, so a genuine love for children is important!
Our families are located in most Australian states and territories. If you prefer, you can opt for a larger city such as Sydney or Melbourne, a coastal town, or even an outback cattle station. You will get the choice of where you want to live, and most importantly with which family that best suits you.
Typical Day
Because every host family is different, your daily schedule will be varied. It will depend a lot on the ages and needs of the children you are caring for and the individual requirements of your host family. As an Au Pair your responsibilities are centred on the children and you won't be expected to do heavy housework. As part of your placement your typical duties will include:
- Waking the children up
- Dressing, bathing and playtime
- Preparing their meals
- Making their beds and doing the children's laundry
- School runs, after school activities, play dates etc.
- Tidying up after them
- Helping with homework
- Babysitting some evenings if the parents are out
- Being their friend and having fun!
- Sharing your own culture through songs, games
You will have a set number of hours (up to 35 hours per week) so plenty of time off to relax and spend time with friends exploring your local area. We will put you in touch with other Au pairs in your area to help you connect and make friends from the moment you arrive.
AIFS supports you throughout your experience, from application to placement and every step of the Au Pair journey. You will have 24/7 emergency support plus a dedicated Community Counsellor.
Once you have completed your placement, you will enjoy full access to the services of AIFS Sydney where you can find work, get advice or book travel. We support almost 3,000 people every year making sure they have access to exclusive travel deals, a wide range of backpacker style work and an amazing Australian adventure!
